Response to the question of Kinship Care

To whom may concern,

Thank you for contacting me about kinship care.

All children, regardless of their background, should be given the opportunity of the best possible start in life. When practical, children who cannot live with their parents should be able to grow up within their wider family. Children benefit from living with someone they already know and trust, rather than a stranger.

Conservatives in Government have already issued guidance for local authorities on how best to support kinship carers, which makes clear that children and young people should receive the support that they and their carers need to safeguard and promote their welfare. We have also made it a requirement for local authorities to publish a policy setting out their approach to promoting and supporting the needs of all children living with kinship carers.

In addition to providing £1.6 billion a year in legal aid, we have announced a reform to the legal support system, which will ensure resources are available for those who need it most. We will also continue to promote early intervention to resolve problems before they escalate.

Best Regards
